Dear János:
Your birthday – very close to mine, which is coming in June – reminds me that you are a member of the class of 1929, which was a good year for medievalists. And you are among the best, both as a scholar and as an organizer and administrator. I forget when we first met, but it was many years ago, and over time our friendship has deepened, leaving many memories. I find it hard to choose among them, but the visit to the crown of St Stephen comes to mind as an occasion marked by both your learning and your energy. Likewise our collaboration – mostly you and very little of me! – on the series Central European Texts of the Middle Ages, which has put all medievalists in your debt.
It was a joy for Pat and myself to see you on our recent visit to Budapest and we join in sending you best wishes for this happy occasion.
Yours,
Giles Constable
