Dearest Janos,
My admiration for you as a scholar, colleague, and mentor has continued to grow ever since our first meeting in Vancouver in 1976. Back then you brought me to Vancouver (and afterwards to Seattle so that I could make it back to Europe). Decades later you brought me to Budapest and thus opened one of the most rewarding and long-lasting chapters in my professional life.
Your passion for history and still more your passion for helping young people remains undimmed and continues to set the standard for what a life of learning and teaching should be. Congratulations on reaching this landmark, but don’t for a moment think about it as a turning point, just another event along the way to be dismissed with your characteristic gruff nonchalance. Mazel tov!
Love always,
Pat
