Happy birthday, János !

Dear János

Many congratulations upon this most recent and auspicious birthday. Ad multos annos! It has been a deeply appreciated pleasure to have been your colleague over the years, to have found one of my first articles being edited by you for publication back in the 1960's, and then to have collaborated on projects in the Central Medieval European texts. Your leadership and your patience have been legendary. Seeing you at conferences in the US, in Canada, and in Europe, being invited to the CEU in its early days, and sharing leisure time to talk about scholarship and many other things--at Leeds, in Berlin, and in Budapest--are treasured parts of my life. Thank you for what you have contributed. As part of this modest share in your birthday I attach pictures which may remind you of some of those good time. (That is, I attach, if I have gotten the technology right--you, better than any, know that I'm still using up my gross of quill pens to write lectures and other things with and may not be entirely peritus in this area!). One if from Leeds in 2005 when you and I sat in the Stables pub for dinner; another is with you and Sue that same year in front of Boddington Hall; and finally, you and Sue aboard our ship last summer in Budapest after my lectures on the Rhein, the Main, and the Danube. Many more birthdays to come! and another reunion in Europe or elsewhere soon. Vivat!

Love and best wishes from both of us,

Paul and Sue
